Inspriation hits at the oddest of times and creativity stems from that. Depending on what medium you are chanelling this creativity the methods can be different, such as a series of just quick sketches exploring an idea, or writing out short scenarios. Generally what I do is carry around a small notebook that holds a lot of my idea’s and inspirations- another thing to do, is not chuck anything away, file it and come back to it when feeling grey.

many things inspire an artist… many times tragedy (9/11 very tragic, but also very inspirational).
i get inspiration from just a walk with my wife in the park
going to a museum or art gallery is very inspirational i find.
seeing some other artist at work is an inspiration (a couple of years ago i watched elden tafft carving some stone statue in the park down the street and it was just one of the most moving and inspirational moments of my life, and considering i didn’t know who he was at the time)
watching children play is extremely inspirational
    music! good music…

to define this in a simple manner: the reason why artists create art is that they react on an idea, object, concept or any other form of stimuli.
This reaction could be equated to inspiration.
Example: when the artist are on a out of town trip, you see a certain scenery; you react to that. The artist would either see that as something beautiful or something that is not. Then he would later on translate that reaction into visual form.
These are the usual ideas that artists react upon:
    Reaction to:
To Life Forces, To Society, To Art, To Technology
