Do artists most often get inspired by something spiritual?

By Creativity Coach
Just Wondering asked:

Or does an artist’s creativity come from their own intellect and experiences alone. I wondered because sometimes I feel my music seems comes from another place.
By spiritual, I am not talking about religious. I sometimes feel this outside inspiration like a stream of consciousness thing when performing. It is the zone but also something else and I can’t place my finger on it.

I think it’s usually mundane practical stuff. A good artist can take the mundane and reportray it as something else.

I think it’s mostly intellectual. I’m a theatre person, and I have worked very hard to become good at my craft. If it was a spiritual thing, I think I would have had some more innate talent at what I do.

Most artists, I cannot speak for.
    Spiritual matters often inspire me….
So do humorous things, beautiful things or people, poetry, movies, lives of saints or heroes, mythology…ad infinatum!

That all depends on what you call ’spiritual’. If you mean something related to religion – then I’d say ‘not usually’. If however, you are referring to something that seems to spring from your very core, your essence, or your soul, then ‘yes’. Sometimes music is the expression of this deep level of your being, sometimes it comes more from externals. In either case, if it is an expression of your truth, then it is spiritual.

I’ve always thought that artists **** other people’s ideas and form them into something like their own, adding with it their own experiences, feelings, and thoughts.
